In March of this year I was invited along with a group of beauty writers to attend the launch of Crabtree & Evelyn’s Floral Fragrance Collection. Speaking at the event was India Hicks, the brand spokesperson, who shared her thoughts on “Fragrance, The Royal Wedding and Memories of an English Garden.”

The floral fragrance collection is based on four single scent notes: lily, rosewater, iris and the English brand’s legendary la legendary lavender.

As the wedding of Kate and William was coming up, Hicks recalled serving as one of the five bridesmaids at another royal wedding, that of Diana Spencer to Prince Charles. Hicks has powerful royal connections: Prince Charles is her second cousin and godfather; her mother, Pamela Hicks, daughter of Countess Mountbatten of Burma and the last Viceroy of India, was a bridesmaid to Queen Elizabeth. She is second cousin to Charles, Prince of Wales.

But it was Diana, who loved rose scents, who was responsible for Hicks’s first fragrance memory.

“I first met Diana at the age of 13,” she recalled. “Diana always wore tea rose. I had never thought about the feminine aspect of fragrance until I met her.” Tea rose was the late princess’s signature scent, the one she wore on her wedding day.

Though the rose fragrance has a long and distinguished pedigree, Crabtree & Evelyn is pushing into a younger 25 to 35 demographic now. They’ve freshened the scent of the hundred-petal rose by blending it with green foliage, violet and peony – un-natural elements like phthalates and parabens.

My personal favorite among the new scents was the classic lavender, which is blended with a touch of lemon leaf and tonka bean.

The new florals infuse a cornucopia of bath and home products: body cream, dusting powder, candles drawer liners, linen mist, triple-milled soap and more.

For a limited time, the iconic company is running specials on so many of these products. Check it out.
