Pure, very attractive product line at reasonable prices builds fans

By Marilyn Green

Jonathan Plotzker, founder of Heliotrope, both a charming little store and product line in San Francisco, set out to make pure, reasonably priced and high quality products with equal appeal to men and women. Both the store and the products succeed, and people outside California can shop Heliotrope’s Web site for goodies from skincare to shave products.

Among the company’s 50-plus natural unisex products, all but the candles and soaps are fragrance-free, although they can be delivered scented to you – simply indicate your choice among single-note
aromatherapy oils or the shop’s custom blends. And the soap and candle scents are beyond delicious – honey/amber, cardamom and black fig.  The purity of the products is outstanding – I tried mine on three different people with very different skin sensitivities and none of them had any reaction other than the desired one.

With virtually no irritation at all, the Aloe & Walnut Exfoliating Wash works for the whole body, leaving skin silky and soothed by sage, honey and chamomile.  The Organic Aloe Olive & Avocado Lotion also works everywhere. I tried it first on hands and feet, then all over, as it absorbs very quickly and the effects are wonderful, thanks to ingredients from olives and orange peel to green tea. There’s an exfoliating soap, too.

Heliotrope’s haircare, too, is most impressive, and the Penthenol Shampoo & Conditioner (combined) was a real surprise. I have never had a good experience with a combination product, but I can’t fault this one. It is an excellent shampoo and the moisturizer is anything but heavy and sticky. Hair really has a sheen afterwards, but keeps its body and shape.

But it’s the facial serums that really won my heart: the Enzyme and Rosehip nighttime formula, the Frankincense & Rose Geranium Oil Serum and the Rose & Nettle Daytime Serum. My advice: Get all three. I used the Night and day serums every day for two weeks and the oil serum when I needed it (perhaps four times during that period). My skin has never looked that good in at least 20 years; the texture is different, the surface is much smoother and it is fresh and moist.

One of the best aspects of Heliotrope products is that nearly all of them are offered in travel size as well as generous bottles, and there are even better priced combination offers.

Most products are priced under $35 and customers in San Francisco can refill their bottles at Heliotrope, 1515 Church Street (at 27th Street) 415-643-4847.
