According to TravelMarketReport, “Consumers are increasingly interested in spa travel for its health and wellness benefits, rather than mere pampering.”

Caliifornia’s reputation as a wellness destination dates back centuries. The state’s climate of health has been called “the California cure.”  Here are some venues that offer health and wellness options — as well as pampering.

Rejuvenating Resorts:

Blue Pearl Laguna: Described as a “luxury boot camp,” this elegant yoga retreat tucked away in Laguna Canyon features yoga workouts, wilderness hiking, organic gourmet meals and cleansing regimes. The resort’s week-long program has created a celebrity following that includes Cindy Crawford, Selma Hayek and Charles Barkley.

Rancho La Puerta: A week-long physical wellness retreat, this destination in Tecate rejuvenates spirits through activities including bar method, cardio, Pilates and yoga classes mixed with bird watching, nature photography, holistic cooking classes and star-gazing tours.

Spa at the Del:Located within Hotel del Coronado off the San Diego Bay, this Victorian-era hotel, known by locals just as “The Del,” is a National Historic Landmark with several pools, beachfront access and hydrotherapy-focused treatments for the entire family.

Hotel del Coronado has beachfront access, pools and hydrotherapy treatments.

The Calistoga Ranch: In an ongoing commitment to wellness, this 48-room luxury Napa resort, hotel and spa is tucked away in a private canyon offering a two-day wellness package designed to help visitors maximize their longevity  through personalized training including heart rate and exercise recommendations.

Calming City Spas:

Huntington Hotel & Nob Hill Spa: Offering a welcoming atmosphere in the midst of San Francisco’s upscale Nob Hill neighborhood, this family-operated property features an indoor infinity-edge pool, a fireside lounge, and steam rooms. The spa’s extensive services reflect the four founding cultures of San Francisco – Chinese, Italian, Japanese, and Victorian – and a variety of holistic and Ayurvedic treatments.

Ritz-Carlton Spa, Los Angeles: Occupying five floors of a 54-story tower in downtown L.A., this urban resort  features two spacious steam rooms with cold plunge showers and recliners, and a rooftop swimming pool and bar providing a tranquil escape  with spectacular city and SoCal views.

Top Health Retreats:

Ascent Spa at Tenaya Lodge: Healing – emotional, physical, and spiritual – comes naturally at the Ascent Spa at Yosemite, focusing on the “organic” capacity to heal. Offering many paths to enhanced wellness, comprehensive and customized programs include Stress Relief Escapes, Couples’ Rejuvenations and DNA of Healthy Lifestyles seminars to create an elevated state of grace during stays.

Cal-a-Vie Health Spa:  Nestled on 200 acres amongst rolling hills in a secluded valley 40 miles north of San Diego, the climate is considered to be the best in the country at this retreat where guests can relax in beautiful, natural surroundings and attain a new vitality. From rigorous morning hikes and fitness classes to afternoons luxuriating in spa therapies, experience the perfect balance to boost fitness and mind-body connection.

California Health & Longevity Institute: Located just north of Los Angeles in Westlake Village, this world-class wellness facility is a leader in science-based lifestyle rejuvenation. A certified “lifestyle consultant” creates personalized health strategies for accomplishing personal goals, while a team of experts — physicians, licensed dieticians, exercise physiologists, fitness trainers, stress management experts, therapists and healthy-living chefs—tailor plans for visitors.

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa: For centuries, Native Americans bathed in the thermal mineral waters located on the site of the current Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn, which had a bathhouse built as a hot springs retreat for San Franciscans in the 1840’s with the elegant Spanish mission-style inn soon following. Visitors flock not just for the healing waters but also for the luxurious amenities to rejuvenate the soul.
