Tides Riviera Maya’s Spa Journey to Mayan Underworld
Cenote Adventure: Spa Journey to the Mayan Underworld
Talk about immersion in the local culture – the Cenote Adventure offered by The Tides Riviera Maya takes you down into the mystical underworld where the Mayans believed their gods dwelt, to watery sacred places where they performed most of their rituals.
The cenotes are underground rivers and caverns with crystal clear waters for swimming, snorkeling or scuba diving, with floodlights illuminating the stalactites and stalagmites in this dreamlike netherworld. It’s easy to imagine Mayan ceremonies taking place here, far removed from the down-to-earth reality above. Maybe the adventure should be called “Alice in Mayaland.”
Following your visit to the cenotes, your Mayan journey will continue above ground – at The Tides Riviera Maya’s spa. After the rigors of the underground experience, you’ll be ready for the relaxation and pampering of a Mayan Twilight Treatment, enjoyed in one of the spa’s outdoor jungle cabins. It begins with body stretching to relax muscles and activate natural circulation. An energetic body cleansing follows using natural, organic herbs from the spa’s herb garden. And completing the treatment is a rejuvenating massage using a mix of volcanic clay and aloe containing minerals that moisturize and refresh the skin, making your body glow.
The Cenote Adventure, including the 2 ½-3 hour trip to the cenotes, snorkeling and the 80-minute Mayan Twilight Treatment, is $300 per person. The Cenote Adventure with scuba diving is $420 per person. To book and for more information: (866) 332-1672 or the website.
Located near Playa del Carmen on Mexico’s Riviera Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula, The Tides Riviera Maya is a serene hideaway that merges luxury amenities with the drama of sea and jungle. The restaurants, lounge, swimming pool, lawns with day beds and all public facilities are set by sugary white sands and the warm Caribbean. Behind this open beachfront public area are all of the private villas immersed in a jungle dense with ferns, palms and guava trees that is the playground of a resident family of friendly spider monkeys. Every villa features a private patio and plunge pool, outdoor shower, and a high-ceiling, thatched-palapa roof.
A major renovation is currently in progress at the resort that will be completed in December 2011. The highlights include: 11 new villas, bringing the total to 41 villas; a new entrance, motor court and reception area; a new grill restaurant by the sand and a reconfiguration and remodeling of the existing lounge and fine-dining restaurant; a complete redo of The Tides Villa and cosmetic upgrades to the other existing 29 villas; and a new gym and gift shop.
