If you’re wondering what the newest, most state-of-the-art treatments are available this year, Houston dermatologist Dr. Paul Friedman, Newport Beach Plastic Surgeon Dr. Se,ora Bayati, San Diego Plastic Surgeon Dr. Richard Chaffoo and New JerseyPlastic Surgeon Dr. Brian Glatt have sorted through the industry to provide their top recommendations for the latest treatments available in 2012:

Melt Away Fat Cells by Freezing them in their Tracks: Zeltiq® CoolSculpting

After years of so-called “fat melting” devices, the newest way to banish bulges takes a colder approach by literally “freezing” fat away. Both Dr. Chaffoo and Dr. Friedman believe that ZELTIQ CoolScuplting, an FDA-cleared and patented method of fat removal will be one of the most in-demand services for 2012. The completely non-invasive, non-surgical procedure rids the body of fat cells by applying cold to the skin and does not require anesthesia or down time. “CoolSculpting is a precise,non-invasive fat removal method which utilizes controlled cooling to kill fat cells without injury to the skin or other tissues and has an average of 20% fat reduction in each treated area,” explains Dr. Friedman. The clinically-proven procedure involves freezing fat cells without damaging the skin. Results are about 25% reduction in fat deposits especially in the abdomen, love handles, and thighs. “It’s the right procedure to benefit individuals who work out regularly, eat a healthy diet, and who are looking to conquer stubborn fat,” notes Dr. Chaffoo. “It is a great option for those who want a quick fix with no time away from work.” Longterm results should remain stable as long as the patient upkeeps a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Results can be noticeable as soon as three weeks after treatment, with full results apparent after two to four months. Patients can have additional procedures for additional effects if they so desire.

Game Changing Technology for Hair Loss: NeoGraft Automated Follicular UnitExtraction (FUE) and Implantation Hair Transplant System

“Oneof the newest methods for hair transplantation is a non-invasive, safe andcomparatively minor procedure,” explains Dr. Chaffoo. The NeoGraftAutomated FUE Hair Transplant device uses a motorized punch that gently rotates around each individual graft in perfectly cylindrical shapes. The device then uses a controlled pneumatic pressure, suction, sliding out the hair follicles smoothly and uniformly. “With no pulling or twisting, the method ofuniform extracted grafts from the donor area, make the automated implantation of the graft uniform as well,” adds Dr. Chaffoo.  The NeoGraftcontrolled pneumatic pressure implantation hand piece is used to insert grafts to the recipient site, insuring a smooth surface. There is minimal discomfort, quick recovery time and no linear scar or scalpel incision. When compared to the traditional strip method, NeoGraft provides more natural looking results.

Reap the Benefits of Stem Cell Therapy: LAVIV™ (azficel-T)

The first and only personalized cell therapy approved by the FDA for aesthetic use to improve the look of smile line wrinkles in adults, LAVIV™ (azficel-T)uses fibroblasts to produce collagen, which helps give skin its tone, structureand overall quality. “As people age, the number of fibroblasts in their skin decreases and collagen breaks down, resulting in wrinkles and lost skin tone,” Dr. Friedman notes. The patented technology behind LAVIV is anadvanced process that extracts a person’s fibroblast cells from a small skin sample and multiplies them in the Fibrocell Science lab. LAVIV is the resulting formulation of a person’s own fibroblast cells, which is then injected into smile line wrinkles. “Being able to offer a breakthrough treatment of this nature is game-changing as LAVIV is made just for them,” explains Dr. Friedman. “LAVIV is truly unique because each patient is being injected with their own collagen-producing fibroblast cells. LAVIV has the potential to be utilized for future applications to treat acne scars, burns and as an active ingredient in topical creams.” The recommended course of LAVIV administration is a series of three uniquely formulated treatments, typically three to six weeks apart. LAVIV is made especially for individuals from their own skin cells.

Erase Sun Spots, Melasma and Hyperpigmentation: elure™

“elure™Advanced Skin Lightening Technology is a safe and effective alternative to the controversial active ingredient hydroquinone, and contains a patented natural enzyme, Melanozyme, which breaks down melanin. “The process is less irritating and actually works to produce visible results at a more rapid pace,” explains Dr. Friedman. The new topical cosmetic product is available only from Dermatologists, Plastic Surgeons and other medial aesthetic providers. elure has been proven in several clinical studies to produce a brighter, more even toned skin appearance in only 28 days. The gentle rich formula is suited for all ages.

Meet the New Year Head-On with Liquid Facial Rejuvenations: Botox™ and Fillers

“More and more, individuals are seeking non- surgical means of facial rejuvenation at a younger age in order to maintain their youthful appearance as long as possible,” Dr. Bayati explains. Dr. Bayati has noticed an increase in people in their 20s coming in for early Botox for line and wrinkle prevention– and heightened requests for a “liquid facelift” – a combination of strategic placement of fillers to restore lost facial volume, along with Botox injection for a “liquid” brow lift and wrinkle softener. “Another appealing aspect is that the procedure does not require any downtime, as opposed to surgery,” says Dr. Bayati. But keepin mind – liquid facial rejuvenation has its limits and is not suitable for all facial aging. Dr. Bayati notes that surgery is still the ultimate method of rejuvenation for more severe cases of facial sagging and aging.

Plump Up this New Year: Fat Grafting

“Fat grafting to provide volumee nhancement has had a tremendous resurgence,” notes Dr. Glatt. “There is a wider appreciation by the public that additional volume provides a more youthful look.” When done properly and in the right amounts, fat grafting provides favorable results.  “Although it is slightly more involved than off-the-shelf fillers, it also lasts much longer,”adds Dr. Glatt. This procedure requires the removal of a patient’s own fat and is then implanted into a desired area. Though fat grafting can be used for several purposes, it is most commonly used to fill areas of the face to improve and bring volume and fullness.  There is little to no downtime, and patients can resume normal activities within a few days.

New Year, New Enhanced You: BreastAugmentation with Silicone Gel Implants

“The old stigma associated with the silicone gel implants of the old is fading as a younger generation is growing up to a world where these devices are FDA approved, better manufactured, safer than ever, and widely available,” explains Dr. Glatt.  “I have noticed more and more silicone gel implants being used for breast augmentations.” These devices produce a more natural looking and feeling breast.  Breast implants are implanted under the breast tissue or chest muscle to increase breast size or implanted to rebuild breast tissue after mastectomy. Implants are also used in revision surgeries to correct or improve results of a prior surgery.
