W Retreat & Spa – Vieques Island, Puerto Rico, US
The W on Vieques had only been open a week when I had the pleasure of visiting. Immediately after checking into a beautiful contemporary room, Michelle Winner and I enjoyed lunch at Mix on the Beach. Then we broke away from the group, as it was time to tour Spa Chakra and get a massage.
We toured the private rooms, many overlooking the ocean. When we saw the couples room, the Spa Director said: “We also want couples to experience services together. I like to say that by opening the [French] doors [to the sea], you don’t need music.”
When we commented on the outdoor shower, she responded: “These enable you to shower under nature’s watchful eye—it’s liberating.”
What is especially wonderful is that all services include a 15-minute footbath to relax you as you make the transition from outside in.
Tranquility radiates throughout the spa, as it does in most Chakra locations. It is a Zen design with canals flowing throughout. The focus is to draw inspiration from the earth, wind and water elements and it succeeds.
Spa Chakra at the W offers over 60 health and beauty therapies to cover mind, body and spirit. At the time we were guests, they did not have the price list for the services ready.
They do have a light spa menu by Alain Ducasse. Products used are by Sue Devitt.
Not being there long enough to experience several of its services, we found it useful to talk to one of the guests, Stacey Kohler. She said: “I can’t say that I have been everywhere in the Caribbean, but of all the places I have been, this is the place I‘m coming back to.” Stacey allowed me to photograph her and gave permission to use her photo and quote. She was on her third day as a guest and a regular spa-goer.
Michelle and I know we would like to return.
A few comments on the resort itself are necessary. It’s unique, beautiful, well-decorated, and probably has the prime location and best beach on Vieques Island. It would be an exceptional escape. If you don’t want spa cuisine, you can choose Mix on the beach, which serves the exceptional food created by the talented executive chef, Dagan Lynn.
If you want to escape without renting a car, the W has a hospitality room at the airport where you can relax until the resort car transfers you to the property. However, as the W is secluded, you may want to rent a car for a day or two if you’d like to explore the island.
